Blue bird Sierra day

Driving north on 395 with my friend Dan Patitucci, searching for snow. Early December is never a given, but always anticipation. The High Sierra looks bare, rocky, not kind to skis. Having tortured the bases the previous day, we decide to turn east and look for a secret stash of “lake effect”.  Plowing through snow in the van we stop when it gets close to the bumper, perhaps we have made a good choice.   About a mile away, an apron of snow tilts back to the sky, the snow under foot is fluffy on a supportable,  albeit thin base.

I choose light touring skis for the climb. At the summit we are greeted by a breathless sky and sweeping views of the Mono Basin, distant ranges of the Great Basin rise above the clearing Poconip. Today is a classic Bluebird day, but clouds on the horizon are the harbinger of the next wave of winter.
